Happy Halloween from Heather's Poetry Site! Below are some things I thought I'd share with you in hopes of getting you in the trick-or treat mood! Note: all links open in a new window.

Here is a painting by Daniel Maclise circa 1833. It's called Snap-Apple Night and it was inspired by a Halloween party he attended in Ireland the previous year (1832)!

A couple of poems to get you in the Halloween Spirit!

Spirits of the Dead
by Edgar Allan Poe

Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone;
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy.

Be silent in that solitude,
Which is not loneliness- for then
The spirits of the dead, who stood
In life before thee, are again
In death around thee, and their will
Shall overshadow thee; be still.

The night, though clear, shall frown,
And the stars shall not look down
From their high thrones in the Heaven
With light like hope to mortals given,
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish,
Now are visions ne'er to vanish;
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more, like dew-drop from the grass.

The breeze, the breath of God, is still,
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token.
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries!

The Cats
by H. P. Lovecraft

Babels of blocks to the high heavens towering
Flames of futility swirling below;
Poisonous fungi in brick and stone flowering,
Lanterns that shudder and death-lights that glow.

Black monstrous bridges across oily rivers,
Cobwebs of cable to nameless things spun;
Catacomb deeps whose dank chaos delivers
Streams of live foetor that rots in the sun.

Colour and splendour, disease and decaying,
Shrieking and ringing and crawling insane,
Rabbles exotic to stranger-gods praying,
Jumbles of odour that stifle the brain.

Legions of cats from the alleys nocturnal.
Howling and lean in the glare of the moon,
Screaming the future with mouthings infernal,
Yelling the Garden of Pluto's red rune.

Tall towers and pyramids ivy'd and crumbling,
Bats that swoop low in the weed-cumber'd streets;
Bleak Arkham bridges o'er rivers whose rumbling
Joins with no voice as the thick horde retreats.

Belfries that buckle against the moon totter,
Caverns whose mouths are by mosses effac'd,
And living to answer the wind and the water,
Only the lean cats that howl in the wastes.

A Grave Encounter
By Wednesday Moon

Lying on the ground-
in the pitch black night.
Not a light in the sky.
Not even moonlight.

The girl in the graveyard-
on a child’s dare.
Friends had taunted her-
“Of spirits you beware!”

So she lies motionless-
near a granite headstone.
Waiting to see ghosts-
but believing she’s alone.

But creeping up behind her-
a sharp weapon in hand-
with an evil gleam in his eyes-
comes an awful man.

Intending to do harm.
Intending to murder.
Comes the well armed man.
An unwanted intruder.

The snapping of a twig-
alerts his tender prey.
And she leaps to her feet-
and quickly runs away.

Cursing under his breath-
the killer gives chase.
Pursuing the innocent girl.
Both in a deadly race.

The girl looks about-
for a place to hide.
Aware he’s drawing nearer-
with each and every stride.

Ducking behind a mausoleum-
she tries to catch her breath.
Willing her heart to still-
praying to avoid death.

Then she slowly smiles-
as she recalls a memory.
Remembering what she is now-
now what she used to be.

She hears the man approaching-
and steps into his path.
Then grabs him by the throat-
and brings him vampires wrath.

The moral should be plain.
The lesson should be clear.
In a graveyard at night-
even killers have much to fear!

"Halloween: The Best Part of Fall"

Though the hues are warm, being red, brown, and gold-
The air carries a biting chill, promising soon to turn cold.
Daylight fades more quickly now; sooner the nights unfold-
Leaves fall to the ground knowing it’s time to release their hold.

They paint the ground with color and crunch beneath our feet-
Releasing an amber aroma, more masculine than sweet.
Soon comes the night when children will trick-or-treat-
disguised as various creatures you wouldn’t want to meet!

So carve the jack-o-lantern and buy candy enough for all.
Don your costume, paint your face, be prepared to have a ball!
Listen for children’s laughter as those goblins come to call.
And pass out treats joyfully for this is the best part of the Fall!
